LEARNING STYLES LESSON PLAN 4

Laurel Leder Ed 381

Understanding the Depression Through Projects

GRADE LEVEL:  High School age students, 9 -12

This lesson offers students choices of projects related to 4 different types of learning styles -- Concrete sequential, abstract sequential, abstract random, and concrete random

AIM:  The students will better understand a period of American history.

GOAL:  The students will develop an awareness of what the Depression Era was like in America by discovering what events led up to the depression, what happened during the depression, and how the depression ended.

PROJECTS

Each student can choose a project of his/her choice from those listed below.  The students can be as creative with the project as they want and may use the individual projects as a guideline only if they desire.  Any project, which is totally different from those listed, must be cleared with the teacher.  Completion of the individual project can be done in whatever manner the students see fit provided it is done constructively.  Time allowed to complete the projects will be three to four weeks.

CONCRETE SEQUENTIAL

POSTER/PICTURE PRESENTATION:  This project will be a poster/picture presentation of the faces of the depression.  Include on it typed, first person accounts researched from books, newspapers and magazines, and radio broadcasts of the time.  Handwritten posters/picture presentations will not be acceptable.  They must be typed and mounted or typed and ready to use with overhead projector.  The projects will be presented to the class and then displayed for a short period of time.  Needed will be heavy tag board, a computer, and appropriate mounting supplies. Students may also do PowerPoint  presentations.

Criteria:

All support or print materials must be typed.

The final project should show at least five first person accounts from at least three different areas of the United States.

These will be presented to the class and then displayed.

ABSTRACT SEQUENTIAL

FIVE POINT PLAN:  The student will design a five-point plan the president could use to get the country out of the depression.  Be sure to research the problems of the depression so you can come up with solutions that would fit the needs of the country.  Present the plan in graph form showing how and where each point would work the best.  Be prepared to answer questions about each plan and debate its merits if necessary.  The projects will be presented in class and then displayed for a short period of time.

Criteria:

The finished project will be typed and graphed on paper large enough for the class to see in a presentation.

The graph should point out exactly what problem(s) each part of the plan will help fix and how this will be accomplished.

The student will present the graph in class and must be prepared to back up all aspects of the plan.

CONCRETE RANDOM

RADIO BROADCAST:  Creation of an old time news report will be done, complete with advertisements and appropriate music.  The broadcast will discuss the stock market crash or some other important event during the depression that was directly related to the depression.  It should be an event, which was important to the entire nation, not just isolated areas of the country.  Describe those things leading up to the event, what happened during the event, and how it impacted the nation in the aftermath.

 Criteria:

This project must be researched and written by the student.  Using a script from a broadcast of the time is not acceptable.

The project must be recorded properly on a tape cassette machine and be of a quality consistent with being able to be played in front of the class.  Your speech and music must be able to be understood.

Broadcast must be performed in the same way as radio broadcasts of the time.

The project will be presented before the class.

ABSTRACT RANDOM

WRITE A SPEECH:  Put together a speech the President could have used to address the nation with right after the stock market crash of 1929.  Include research gained on his reflections about current events related to the crash and new ideas he would have used to relieve its affects.  Include any words of comfort for victims and the nation as a whole.  Research must be done into what led up to the crash and what happened in its immediate aftermath.

 Criteria:

  • The speech must be an original writing of the student and must be at least five minutes in length but not more than eight minutes long.

  • Notes can be used during presentation provided they are put onto 3x5 note cards.

  • A typed double spaced copy of the speech must be turned in to the teacher at the time it is presented before the class.

EVALUATION:

Each student will be graded on whether the criteria for their particular activity were followed.  These projects are set up to help the students experience some of the events of the depression through their research and study of the era.  This project is to be used to not only see how well they can do research, but also how creative they can be with what they find.  These projects will count for 50% of their grade during this grading period.
