Assignments using multiple intelligences:

Students will be responsible for reading four novels in the course of this unit. As an example of how lessons could be diversified, I have used one of the novels usually covered in 10th grade literature, Animal Farm by George Orwell, to illustrate how assignments could be diversified to the multiple intelligences. This novel covers the political category in this unit.

Students may choose from the different assignments classified according to intelligence:

Logical/ Mathematical

The students will be required to make a logical prediction about the possible future of Animal Farm. Using examples and portions of the text, they will be required to explain why their prediction is a good one. They can also use outside documents to support their premise.

Verbal/Linguistic

The student will be required to come up with a political speech that Napoleon would use when talking to other animals at another farm. The purpose of this speech would be to encourage other animals to join his movement and he would be leader of their farm as well. The speech would need to be within 3-5 minutes. The student would be required to give the speech in class.

Visual/ Spatial

The student will be required to make a display that has elements of three dimensions that explains Animal Farm to the general viewer. It can be a poster, sculpture, box scene, or any other art form the student chooses. They must speak with the teacher about their idea before beginning to make sure that the criteria are adequately met.

Musical

The student will be required to make up a song or jingle that describes Animal Farm. They will be required to either perform the lyrics in class or make a tape that will be played in class. The time limit is not shorter then two minutes but not longer then four minutes.

Interpersonal

Students will interview five other students about their reactions to Animal Farm. They will write a simple news release describing the reactions to the novel and quoting class members. They may also interview two adults who have read this novel as part of this assignment.

Intrapersonal

The student will be required to write a paper on this question: If you were and animal on Animal Farm which animal would you be and how would you feel with Napoleon as your leader? Be as specific as possible, sighting the novel when necessary.

Bodily-Kinesthetic

These students will be required to come up with a physical game that would represent the main ideas in Animal Farm. They can use a game that they already know and modify it, or they can come up with an entirely new game. They will be required to show it to the class while playing it with a few others in their group.

Evaluations

Each activity would be worth 50 points. But each activity will also have specific rubrics reflecting the assignment. Each of the four novels covered will be worth 50 points, total project point are 200 for the unit.
