maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum; MAIDENHAIR FERN FAMILY [Pteridaceae]) Medium-sized fern (to about 2') with finely divided fronds of distinctly flattened pinnae with fan-shaped to oblong pinnules (look at the pictures!).  Leafstalks wiry and shiny black.  Sori on, and covered by, the upper margins of the pinnae.  Shady understories of rich woods.  [013]
