spike moss (Selaginella spp.; SPIKE MOSS FAMILY [Selaginellaceae) Small, pale green plants, typically even lower growing and with smaller leaves than the above.  Technically distinguished by sexual reproduction involving male and female gametophytes produced by two kinds of spores.  Easily confused with mosses.  Three species occur in Wisconsin, typically on open ground.  [005]
