cat-tail (Typha spp.; CATTAIL FAMILY [Typhaceae]) Tall (5-10') perennial herbs with long, grass-like leaves. Staminate flowers are borne in a loose, deciduous spike above the characteristic, persistent dense brown cylinder of pistillate flowers and fruits. Found in non-acid marshes or emergent from shallow water; flowers in late summer. One native species, one introduced species and a hybrid between the two are found in Wisconsin. [134]
