potato (Solanum tuberosum; NIGHTSHADE FAMILY [Solanaceae]) Weak-stemmed tuber-bearing perennial which rarely survives a Wisconsin winter even if it escapes from cultivation.  Flowers with a showy white or bluish 5-petalled corolla and distinctive yellow anthers.  Leaves compound with stalked ovate leaflets alternating with much smaller sessile ones.  One of the world’s most important food plants.  Native to South America.  [099]
