Triticum aestivum; wheat [Poaceae]  Low to relatively tall  [1½-4'] annual grasses with flat blades and thick spikes.  Spikelets 2-5 flowered, solitary, placed flatwise at each joint of a continuous or jointed floral stalk.  Cultivated since ancient times with many cultivars and subspecies.  Occasionally escapes to disturbed sites, roadsides.  [044]
