Vaccinium macrocarpon, V.
oxycoccos; cranberry
[Ericaceae]
Small, native, trailing shrubs with
short branches ascending from horizontal stems.
Tiny (<½"), alternate, evergreen leaves.
Nodding pinkish flowers in early summer, with 4 recurved,
petal-like lobes. Stamens
converge to a point, forming a cone that gives the flower a shooting
star appearance. Fruit a
disproportionately large (½") acidic red berry.
The two species differ in flower position and somewhat in size.
Both are found in bogs.
V. macrocarpon is
extensively cultivated in central Wisconsin.
