Monotropa uniflora;
indian-pipe
[Ericaceae]
A very unique small (4-8”), native, perennial plant found in rich
forests throughout the state.
Monotropa is a non-photosynthetic saprophyte, deriving
nourishment from mycorrhizal fungi.
The plant is waxy white-to-pinkish, turning brown in late summer.
A single small, white, 5-parted flower nods from the tip of each
stem in mid- to late-summer, becoming erect as the fruits develop.
Tiny, powder-like seeds are wind-dispersed from capsules in fall.
