Helianthus annuus;
Common sunflower
[Asteraceae]
Tall (to 10'), coarse, sparsely branched annual.
Ray flowers large, strap-shaped, and
bright yellow. Disk nearly
flat, 1-2" wide in wild species, much wider in cultivated varieties.
Leaves mostly alternate, toothed, long-stalked, and rough on both
sides. Cultivated for its
seeds and oil, native west of the Mississippi and occasionally escaped
from cultivation elsewhere.
Flowers in summer and fall in waste places and along roadsides.
A wide variety of other sunflower species are native to
Wisconsin.
