Acer rubrum; red maple [Sapindaceae]  Red maple can be distinguished by smooth grey bark on young trunks; 3-5 lobed leaves (lobes shallower than silver maple); reddish twigs and buds; and red fall color.  Flowers in early spring.  It is one of the most common tree species in second-growth hardwoods on a wide range of sites.  [094]
