Larix laricina; tamarack, larch [Pinaceae]  Slow growing, deciduous(!) conifer which frequently falls far short of reaching its potential height of 40-80' because of poor sites.  Short (½-1") needles seemingly clustered in bunches of 12 or more, turning golden yellow in the fall.  Cones small (½-1" long).  Bark dark when mature, and flaking off in small scales.  Common in acid bogs.  Like black spruce, produces adventitious roots to replace those lost to sinking.  [018]
