Tsuga canadensis; hemlock [Pinaceae]  Tall evergreen tree (60-75') with minutely stalked, 2-ranked, ¼-¾" needles that taper towards the apex, and have two white bands of stomata on the underside.  Cones are ovoid, ½-¾" long, attached by a slender stalk.  Bark is purplish brown, scaly, deeply furrowed when mature.  Found in anything from pure stands to occasional individuals in northern hardwood forests, but always on cool moist sites.  More tolerant of shady understory conditions than any other native conifer.  [017]
