Prunus spp.; cherry
[Rosaceae]
Shrubs and trees with leaves simple,
alternate, usually with evenly toothed margins and glands on the
leafstalks. Flowers are
white, showy, and short lived, giving way eventually to the
characteristic fleshy red to dark purple fruits.
Bark of mature trees is generally smooth and highly colored,
ranging in our species from red to almost black.
The 11 species of cherries found in Wisconsin are predominantly
shrubs or small-trees, but
P. serotina (black
cherry), in particular, can grow to be a large tree with quite valuable
wood.
