Rosa spp.; wild rose
[Rosaceae]
Spiny shrubs with showy, white,
pink, or purple flowers, ¾-4" wide, the petals broadest at the tip and
usually slightly indented.
Leaves compound with stipules at the base and 3-9 pinnate leaflets.
About 20 species in our area, many of them escaped from
cultivation. Roadsides,
thickets, and open woods.
Flowers in late spring and summer.
