Trifolium aureum, T. campestre;
hop clover
[Fabaceae]
Naturalized annual (biennial?) herbs
with 3-parted leaves and small, cylindrical heads of bright yellow
flowers.
Blooms throughout the summer.
T. aureum has slightly
smaller flowers, palmately compound leaves and leaflets without
petioles..
T. campestre has pinnately
compound leaves and the terminal leaflet is stalked.
Both species are easily confused with
Medicago lupulina (black
medick), which has smaller flower heads.
