Osmunda claytoniana;
interrupted
fern [Osmundaceae]
Large
pinnate fronds, with deeply lobed pinnae shorter near the tip and base,
give each frond a generally elliptic outline.
Fertile fronds taller (3’ or more)
with “interruptions” consisting of highly modified fertile pinnae which
ripen to dark brown.
Common along wooded edges, often on
drier sites than the previous two species.
