Selaginella spp.; spike moss [Selaginellaceae]  Small, pale green plants, typically even lower growing and with smaller leaves than the club mosses.  Distinguished by sexual reproduction involving male and female gametophytes produced by two types of spores.  Easily confused with mosses.  Three species occur in Wisconsin, typically on open ground.  [005]
