The hybrid course section of Geography 101 is designed for those who want some flexibility in scheduling their learning while having more contact with their instructor than with a totally online course. Online learning is not for everyone. You should be self-motivated and able to complete work in a timely fashion. The advantage of taking a course online is its flexibility. Be prepared to spend approximately 1-2 hours per day completing the assignments and studying for exams.
Course Format:
The content normally delivered through a lecture has been replaced with online audio and video programs, textbook and online readings. You will complete at least two concept review sheets a week to assess your understanding of this material. The lab is delivered in a face-to-face setting that allows you to work collaboratively with other students in the course and get help with course content. Approximately two lab exercises will be completed each week. The course grade is based on course assignments and four multiple-choice unit exams. All exams are done online and are open book.
Hardware & Software requirements:
No special hardware or software is required to take the Internet section of Geography 101 if you use computers in a campus computer lab. You will need a set of headphones to listen to audio/video programs at these computer stations. If you live off-campus and want to complete the course, the latest versions of the following software should be installed on your computer:
• RealPlayer (Get the free version)
• iTunes (Free for both Windows and Macs)
• Adobe Reader (Free)
Connecting to the course site should be done with a high-speed connection, though a dial-up connection through a local Internet service provider will be fine for most work (but slow) if you live off-campus. Use a wired broad-band connection for taking exams.
Additional Required Materials:
Geography 101 Lab Manual - available from the Geography/Geology Department office, Science D332. (It is not available from the UWSP Bookstore). The manual can be purchased with cash or a check payable to UWSP. Make sure you get the version for Professor Ritter's online section of Geography 101. The department will mail the manual to those students living outside Portage county once payment has been received.
