Teaching and Learning Styles

Overview
Naturally, teachers care deeply about how they teach and what their students learn. While there is considerable sage advice about teaching within disciplines, there is often little connection to  teaching methods across disciplines. To compound this, most academics have not received any formal training in either the body of research about teaching and learning, nor in modern, effective teaching methodologies - it is often just assumed that faculty would absorb their content and be able to present it successfully.

But the advent of a new generation of students and increasingly sophisticated technology has left many teachers separated from their students. Similarly, most faculty teach their students in ways they were taught. And these methods may not be reaching today's students.

How do our students learn? How can student learning be  effectively assessed in the best ways? What important principles from cognitive science and pedagogy should all faculty know and utilize in their teaching? All of these are challenges that today's professoriate face.
