Verbascum thapsus; common mullein [Scrophulariaceae]  A distinctive and imposing biennial found on disturbed sites throughout the state.  First year plant a low-growing rosette 1-2’ across.  Grows to 7’ tall during the second year with large alternate leaves near the base and progressively smaller leaves higher up.  Stem and leaves densely covered with branched hairs giving the plant a pale grey-green color and velvety texture.  Stem terminates in a dense spike of yellow flowers in mid to late summer.  Main stalk and seed capsules persist through winter.  From Eurasia.  [123]
