Plantago spp.; plantain [Plantaginaceae]  Several species of annual, biennial, or perennial herbs, most with a rosette of basal leaves and a leafless flower stalk.  Flowers small and inconspicuous, densely arranged in a narrow spike or somewhat broader head.  Leaves strongly ribbed, entire or barely toothed, and ranging from narrow to broad depending on the species.  Some species are common weeds of lawns, roadsides, and waste places, with different individuals flowering throughout the growing season.  Two native species, the others introduced.  [121]
