Viola spp.; violet [Violaceae]  Numerous species of small perennial herbs.  Flowers zygomorphic with 5 petals.  Most species with violet petals, and those species also with white varieties, but also a few species with yellow or exclusively white petals.  The lower petal is spurred at the base.  Most violets have heart-shaped leaves, and occur inconspicuously below other plants in woods, on wood edges, or in openings.  Showy flowers are borne in the spring, and inconspicuous but fertile enclosed flowers are produced later in the growing season.  [060]
