Taxus spp.; yew [Taxaceae]  Our species are evergreen shrubs with flat, minutely stalked needles, 2-ranked on smooth twigs.  Needles distinguishable from fir and hemlock by lack of obvious pale lines of stomates on underside.  Cone is small, red, fleshy, and berry-like.  Our single native species (T. canadensis) almost eradicated by deer browsing, but T. cuspidata (Japanese yew) is widely planted as an ornamental shrub or hedge.  [022]
