Cichorium intybus;
chicory, blue-sailors
[Asteraceae]
Erect perennial of
variable size (1-6'), with a long taproot. Blue to white flower
heads (1-1½"), essentially stalk-less, from axils of small upper leaves.
Leaves alternate, entire to pinnately divided, becoming smaller
near the top. Roadsides,
fields, and waste places. Flowers in summer and fall. An
ecologically invasive native of Europe.
