Silene latifolia, S. vulgaris;
bladder campion
[Caryophyllaceae]
Two closely related species, native to
Europe, but widely naturalized in North America.
Opposite leaves, 1" white flowers with 5 notched petals and a
tubular calyx which becomes inflated during fruit development.
S. latifolia is often somewhat taller and hairy.
Plants dioecious but look very similar.
S. vulgaris is smaller
and hairless. Both species
flower throughout summer and into fall.
