Rumex crispus; curly dock
[Polygonaceae]
Coarse, homely, perennial plant (to 5'
tall) with grooved stems and large, long, narrow leaves with strongly
rippled margins. Flowers
very small, distinctly stalked and aggregated in a dense inflorescence,
green initially but becoming rust colored as small, three-winged fruits
develop. A weed of ditches,
fields, and waste places.
Several other dock species also occur in Wisconsin.
Native of Europe.
