Urtica dioica,
Laportea canadensis;
nettle [Urticaceae]
Two distinct but related species, each with stinging hairs.
U. dioica (Stinging
nettle) is taller (to 6’), with opposite, elongate, coarsely toothed
leaves and is found in the open on a variety of disturbed sites.
L. canadensis (Canadian wood nettle) has broadly oval alternate
leaves and is found in woods and forests on rich soils with moderate
moisture.
