Fragaria virginiana, F. vesca
subsp.
americana;
wild strawberry [Rosaceae]
Small, native perennials with
5-petaled white flowers and spreading runners.
The familiar red fruit is the aggregate product of the receptacle
and the many pistils of a single flower.
Leaves are compound, with three coarsely toothed, egg-shaped
leaflets.
F. virginiana is often found
in more open sites. Flowers
in spring and early summer, one of the earliest edible wild fruits.
