Family Life and the Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partnership
*TENTATIVE PLAN - SPRING BREAK 2010

Over 9 days, participants will experience the finest, as well as the most challenging, aspects of Latin American culture and family life.

Managua:  The world is becoming smaller, more globally connected, yet we know so little about our Southern neighbors. Students will see a full spectrum of life in Nicaragua, learning about families, the economy, sustainable gardening, and how a people can rise above their circumstances, and rise even farther when each of us lends a hand. Rosa’s learning center, sustainable garden, and lending library (all from her small home) is just one of many rural experiences we will enjoy. Plenty of time in schools, markets, tours, and restaurants will round out participant’s full exposure to family life and all its’ resiliency in this beautiful Central American country.

Making a Difference:  The Wisconsin Nicaragua Partnership (WN/P), with offices right here in Stevens Point, has a 40 year history making a difference in Nicaragua. They have sent fire engines, ambulances, wood shop tools, sewing machines, boxes of books, and even sun glasses (a major hit with the locals, kids and adults alike) to assist the resilient people of this beautiful, yet impoverished country. In the past, UWSP students sent backpacks full of school supplies to school aged girls, allowing them to go to school.
