The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point provides extraordinary study programs to those wishing an education beyond the bounds of the classroom or campus. Since 1969, both the Spring and the Fall Britain programs have allowed students to experience Europe, Britain, and especially London -- now we add to this special opportunity for eligible students to do their externship/internship abroad.

This program is for UWSP students of applied physics, arts management, business, communication, English, interior architecture, history, International studies, sociology, political science, theater & health promotion/wellness. Students of international studies, geography & peace studies should check with their respective department chairs as internships may be available for them too.


Application: A London Internship application packet is available in the International Programs Office, Room 108 Collins Classroom Center or by clicking here.  Permission required from your major/department Britain Internship Coordinator. Coordinator’s signature is required on the Internship application form. Students will be asked to attend an Informational / Selection meeting and schedule a final interview.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:  March 1 for fall and April 1 for spring for guaranteed consideration.  Summer internships are also available. Late applications are often taken; contact the International Programs Office for information on available spots.


Eligibility

Applicable majors and minors should apply. Minimum GPA of 2.75 to apply.


Costs

Cost Includes:

  • 12 Week Academic/Internship Program in London plus 2-3 week continental study tour.
  • International Airfare, Chicago-London-Chicago.
  • Internship placement, orientation, supervision. 24 hours per week for 6 credits.
  • During the semester, students need to take additional  courses from the UWSP Semester in Britain offerings to reach full-time status, 12 or more credits.   Standard courses include:   English, History, International Studies and Theater.   Core class are listed below.
  • Room and board in central London.
  • UW-SP full-time tuition for Wisconsin Residents (Minnesota students qualify for reciprocity.)  Out-of staters pay an additional $1000. 
  • UW-System mandatory health/travel insurance.
  • Plan your budget to cover passport, visa (c. $350) and personal expenses.

In addition to the internship credits, students need chose two classes from the list below, or the courses offered by the UWSP faculty leader; those classes vary each term.

PSYCHOLOGY - In the spring of 2011, Dr. Justin Rueb will lead the program and offer courses in Psychology.  Please contact him directly for course descriptions.   Psychology student should see Professor Rueb for independent study options in Psychology for the spring of 2011.

BUSINESS 320 - Principles of Management (for fall 2011)  3 credits --- Business students should see Professor Barbara Mihm for a full class description and also for independent study options in Business for the fall of 2011.

 

PLUS:

English 334 – Shakespeare.  3 cr.  Tragedies and Later Plays.  Introductory material on early years of Shakespeare's life.  This course involves a field trip to Stratford-upon-Avon, the Globe Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in London, etc.  The class is designed to make even those who have no previous knowledge of Shakespeare understand and appreciate the person many consider to be the greatest playwright of all times.  GDR: HU2

 History 396 WE– Regional History:  British Culture & Society.  3 cr.  History informed by visits to historic locations and cultural centers with appropriate study and writing.  British culture, society and institutions, in the 18th century to the present.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course and enrollment is limited to 21 students.  GDR: HU4 Writing Emphasis.

 International Studies 300 – International Study Tour:  The Europe Union.  2 cr.  REQUIRED.  An analysis of social, cultural, economic, and political conditions through on-site tours and lectures with appropriate study and writing.  This class will include the European Continental Study Tour along with Britain group study tours to possibly Cambridge, the Globe Theatre and Stratford. 

 International Studies 381 – Culture & Civilization: Contemporary Britain.  3 cr.  Advanced survey within a specific country or region. Lectures and discussions on British society with an emphasis on London.  Various topics include: political issues, education, government, transportation, the Royal Family, arts and economics.  GDR: HU4

 Theatre 329 - Drama Workshop:  Theatre as a Popular Art.  3 cr.  Popular theatre from the viewpoint of the audience, the artists and producing groups through visits and tours to the theatre.  There is an approximate $190 surcharge for the theatre tickets.  GDR: HU1 

 WELLNESS 199 A/A ‑ Independent Study.  1 cr.  Obtain standardized forms and requirement packets from the International Programs Office.  GDR: WL A/A


Withdrawal

Withdrawal up to ten weeks before the start of the program, all fees except the initial deposit may be refunded. After that time, airline, substantial intern placement fees (approx. $1200) and housing cancellation charges may be assessed.  If the program would be canceled, all fees will be refunded.
