The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point provides extraordinary study programs to those wishing an education beyond the bounds of the classroom or campus. Since 1969 both the Spring and the Fall Britain Programs have allowed students to experience Europe, Britain, and especially London.

Application Deadline:  April 1 (spring semester)/March 1 (fall semester) of the prior academic year for guaranteed consideration; though late applications can sometimes be accommodated. Please check with the International Programs Office for available positions.

Eligibility

Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors from all disciplines with academic focus, maturity, motivation, and an international perspective. Group size is limited.

Costs

Cost Includes:

  • 14-15 Week Academic Program.
  • Air Travel, Chicago-London (arrangements can be made to depart from other major airports). Return from continental Europe in the Spring, London in the Fall.
  • Sponsored side trips in Britain may include Stratford, Cambridge, Bath, and Canterbury.
  • Room in central London, breakfasts, and most lunches and suppers:
    International Student House.
  • UW-SP tuition for Wisconsin Residents (Minnesota students qualify for reciprocity, surcharge for other out-of-staters pay ONLY $1,000).
  • UW-System Mandatory Health/Travel Insurance.
  • Plan your budget to cover: passport, personal expenses and fees for classes such as  Drama.
  • Study tour of the European Union to include stops in Brussels, Strasbourg, Frankfurt, etc.

Entry/Exit Itinerary

Approximately two - three week continental tour of the European Union to include stops in Frankfurt am Main, Baden-Baden, Trier and Heidelberg in Germany, Strasbourg and Colmar in France,   Luxembourg,  Brussels in Belgium, etc.
The European Union (EU) has emerged as a major political, social and economic force in the world today.  But what compelled the highly competitive European countries to move beyond conflict to such unprecedented cooperation?  
This study tour will take you to key institutions of the European Union and to various historic sites to help you understand the growth of a common European identity.  Students wishing to pursue careers in business, government and education will benefit from a firm understanding of the EU, and this study tour will add a valuable component to their résumés.   With additional visits to museums, historic sites, music halls, castles and cathedrals, the study tour will help you understand—and enjoy—Europe today.  Accommodations in youth hostels, travel by train and/or bus. 


Classes

Upper division classes:  British History, Theatre Appreciation, English (Shakespeare), International Studies. Courses are taught by British professors on site or at varied London city locations that take advantage of much that this great and historic city affords.

A UWSP faculty member, or appointee, will accompany the group and teach in his or her discipline. Programs are filling up fast. Apply for:

*THEATRE 329 ‑ Drama Workshop: Theatre as a Popular Art
3 credits, GDR: HU1

Popular theatre from the viewpoint of the audience, the artists and producing group through visits and tours to the theatre. There is an approximate $150 surcharge for theatre tickets.


ENGLISH 334 ‑ Shakespeare
Tragedies and Later Plays, 3 credits, GDR: HU2

Introductory material on early years of Shakespeare's life. This course involves a field trip to Strafford-upon-Avon, the Globe Theatre, or the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in London, etc. The class is designed to make even those who have no previous knowledge of Shakespeare understand and appreciate the person many consider to be the greatest playwright of all times.


BUSINESS 320 - Principles of Management (for fall 2011 only)
3 credits   --- Business students  should see Professors Mihm and Martin for a full class description and also for independent study options in Business for the fall of 2011.


HISTORY 396 - Regional History: Modern Britain
3 credits, GDR: HU4    British culture, society and institutions, in the 18th century to the present.


INTERNATIONAL STUDIES 300 - European Union Study Tour
1 credit, REQUIRED

International Studies 381 – Culture & Civilization: Contemporary Britain.  3 cr.  Advanced survey within a specific country or region. Lectures and discussions on British society with an emphasis on London.  Various topics include: political issues, education, government, transportation, the Royal Family, arts and economics.  GDR: HU4

Music 300 – Appreciation of Music in Performance.  3 credits.  (for spring 2012 only)   Music appreciation; art of listening to and critiquing live music performances.  Required attendance at several concerts around the city.  Additional course fee to cover the cost of performances. Interested students should contact Prof. Thayer for a full class description.

WELLNESS 199 A/A ‑ Independent Study
3 credits, GDR: WL A/A

Obtain standardized forms and requirement packets from the International Programs Office.

INDEPENDENT STUDY
1-3 credits

Detailed forms are available in the International Programs Office. See the Director or Associate Director of International Programs for advising. Procedure for approval must be followed; please make sure you have our instruction sheet. Independent Study credits are taken in addition to the 13-credit minimum.


Withdrawal

Up to ten weeks before the start of the program, all fees except the initial $250 deposit will be refunded. After the time, tuition, airline, tour costs and housing charges are assessed. If the program would be cancelled, all fees will be refunded. Because exchange rates and airline prices fluctuate, International Programs reserves the right to cancel, surcharge, or to alter the program.


Special Offers

A second semester option based in Szeged, Hungary will also be available. For fulltime Wisconsin resident tuition and room and board this trip will come in at approximately $5,800-6,300! See UWSP International Programs Staff for details.
