Art, Architecture, and Design in the Land of the Rising Sun
Summer Seminar: May 25 to June 13 2011

Participants will visit Japanese museums and sites concentrating on visual arts of the Neolithic through the Meiji periods. Issues and sites of concern to contemporary Japanese culture will also be considered. A strong emphasis will be placed on art historical concepts.

Academic Directors

Dr. Cortney E. Chaffin, Assistant Professor of Asian Art History and Dr. Larry F. Ball, Professor of Art History, will accompany the group.

Dr. Chaffin has an undergraduate BA in Art History from the University of Michigan-Dearborn, and a Masters degree and a PhD in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the Association for Asian Studies and is a Kolb Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

Dr. Ball, an active field archaeologist, has a BA in Greek Language & Classical Archaeology from Oberlin College and a PhD in Roman Art from the University of Virginia. He has also been a regular member of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and a Mellon Fellow at the American Academy in Rome.

Credits

Art History ART 396 (GDR NW and HU1) for three transferable UW-SP undergraduate credits. The course can be audited at the same price although students registering for credit are given priority for admission.

Costs

$5,890-$6,390 (estimate). This figure includes airfare from Chicago and return, 20 days lodging, breakfasts & dinners, all ground transportation, most entrance fees and three undergraduate Wisconsin resident credits. Minnesota residents qualify for reciprocity. $250 for all other nonresidents.

This seminar is open to art & design majors, as well as to those who share an interest in East Asian art and culture

Registration, Deposits, Payments & Withdrawal

Formal registration should be accompanied by an initial non-refundable deposit of $250.  Contact International Programs for the formal registration form. The trip is limited to 28 participants, so early registration is strongly advised. (The last two similar programs where fully subscribed 7 months before departure.)  A payment schedule will be sent for the balance of the payment. Up to ten weeks before departure, all fees except the initial deposit will be refunded on withdrawal.  After that, airline cancellation charges may also be assessed.

Day 20 Coach to airport: Fly to Chicago.
