What is surface tension?

The surface of a fluid will act like a membrane that is under tension.  It therefore requires work to increase the surface area of a fluid.  Surface tension is a measure of the amount of work required to increase the surface area.  Surface tension can be defined as the force per length exerted across any line in a surface.  Surface tension can be difficult to visualize.  Click Here to view a cartoon depicting the action of surface tension for a free-standing film.
