Noteworthy

JoAnne Katzmarek and Lisa Bardon, education, co-presented “Expanding the Boundaries:  The Power of Narrative Structures in Teacher Education” at the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives in Learning in Estes Park, Colo.

Patricia Shaw, education, presented and published “Leading Toward Changes in Higher Education:  A Personal Response to Economic Conditions” at the 2nd International Conference on Education, Economy and Society held in Paris, France.  The presentation gave an overview of strategies and policies she implemented to address maintaining program quality and collegial communication in an age of reduced resources. 

Jodi Olmsted, health care professions, completed the Academy for Leadership Training and Development program, a yearlong program for advancing organizational leadership and providing succession planning for leaders in post-secondary institutions.

Quinn Stanley, education, presented “What Do You Got a Bible in Your Room For?:  Teacher Spirituality and Violent Students” at the Religion and Health:  Interdisciplinary Engagement and Interpretation Conference at Duke University in Durham, N.C.

Patty Caro, education, co-presented “Intervention:  What Parents Reveal Through Interviews Regarding Priorities, Concerns, and Socioeconomic/Cultural Issues” at the 26th Annual International Conference of the Division for Early Childhood held in Kansas City, Mo.  This joint presentation focused on parent perceptions across diverse educational settings.

Paula DeHart, education, in collaboration with JoAnne Katzmarek, gave a presentation, “People Making a Difference:  Promoting Compassionate Action in Service-Learning,” at the National Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference in Denver, Colo.

Extramural Grants

Henry Wojnicki, Upward Bound, $13,984 from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation to “Support the Science and Math Summer Instruction and College Campus Visits in fall 2010 and spring 2011.”

JoAnne Katzmarek, education, named principal investigator for a $34,837 grant, “Development of an Early Childhood Education Cohort Group:  A Plan to Increase Articulation Rates,” funded by COBE (Committee on Baccalaureate Expansion) to create a UWSP/WTCS cohort group to help WTCS grads earn a degree and teacher certification in ECE/SPED. 

Henry Wojnicki, Upward Bound, federal award $414,415 for 2010-2011 year, from USDOE, representing the fourth year of a five-year grant cycle.  The program will serve 80 low-income and first generation high school youth from the surrounding area that embark upon a college education, serving 10 target high schools.

Patty Caro, education and principal investigator, with co-investigators Yomi Ogunnaike-Lafe, education, and April Hartjes of Mid-State Technical College, received a grant from the Wisconsin State Personnel Development Grant, Institutions of Higher Education Hub for $5,000. 

Holly Petrillo, forestry, $23,000 from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for “Rapid Ecological Assessment of Forests of the Great Lakes Biology Network.”

Bobbi Kubish, natural resources, $110,013 from U.S. Dept. of Education-FIPSE for “TransAtlantic Paper Science Dual Undergraduate Degree Program (TAPS).”

Robert Rosen, music, $10,000 from Wisconsin Arts Board for “Very Young Composers.”

Michael Demchik, forestry, $930 from WI Dept. of Natural Resources for “Karner Blue Butterfly Recovery Program Population Estimate Survey,” $225 from Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin for “Karner Blue Butterfly Restoration,” and $2,000 from WI Dept. of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection for “Improving Bush-type Hazelnuts for Commercial Production Through Cooperative Regional Breeding and Evaluation.”

Qiang Sun, biology, $66,000 from California Department of Food and Agriculture for “Clarification of xylem features limiting the entry and systemic spread of Xylella fastidiosa in grapevines and exploration of an approach controlling Pierce’s disease symptom development.”

Tracy Hofer, business and economics, $2,000 from Council for Economic Education for “Focus: Globalization Workshop for Teachers,” and $1,000 from WI Council on Economic Education/Economics Wisconsin for “Center for Economic Education.”

Devinder Sandhu, biology, $92,804 from National Science Foundation for “An Integrated Translational Genomic Approach to Improve Biotic and Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Cereals- BREAD.”

Robert Wolensky, sociology, $2,340 for “Anthracite Stories: The Shifting Ground of Narrative, Memory and Place in an American Industrial Landscape, 1830-2000.”
