UWSP students excel as Model UN delegation
in New York City
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) students earned honors at the annual National Model
United Nations (NMUN) conference held in New York City this month.
“UWSP’s United Nations Student Organization's performance at the 2009 NMUN Conference was a great
success,” said Chance Whitby, student trip leader. “We are quite proud to have brought home two
awards, an honorable mention and an Outstanding Position Paper Award.”
The UWSP delegation, all members of the United Nations Student Organization (UNSO) on campus,
represented the Republic of Indonesia on 11 different committees and had a mission briefing by the
Indonesian Ambassador to the United Nations at the Permanent Indonesian Mission to the UN. Seven
members are from China, Japan, and Singapore.
More than 300 universities attended the conference sponsored by the National Collegiate Conference
Association with more than 4,000 students participating from 27 countries.
"Partaking in the National Model UN conference was an incredible experience. Being granted the chance
to represent UWSP on the national level was honor enough, but representing the country that issued me
my passport upped the importance and surreal levels threefold. The highlight of the trip, in addition
to connecting and debating with some of the most talented, promising minds in world politics from all
over the world, was meeting the Indonesian delegation to the UN as well as our ambassador, Marty
Natalegawa. Let's just say I know where I will be interning after graduation," said Baby Ramadhany
Soehartono, a junior from Singapore.
“For the second time since joining this international competition 12 year ago, UWSP students brought
home two much deserved awards placing this campus with such academia heavyweights as the University
of Cambridge in England and Loyola University of Chicago,” said Faculty Adviser Jianwei Wang. “Under
the most strenuous and competitive environments, our students really stood tall this year and I along
with my other political science faculty are very proud.”
UWSP’s Model UN project this year received support from the Student Government Association, the
Chancellor’s Office, Academic Affairs Office, Dean’s Office of the College of Letters and Science,
and the Political Science Department. More information is on the Web
