Forestry education program hosts statewide forestry
knowledge competition
The LEAF K-12 (Learning Experiences & Activities in Forestry) education program at the
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) hosted the Future Farmers of America Forestry
Career Development event held at the UW-Madison Arboretum in partnership with the UW-Madison
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Sarah Gilbert, outreach specialist in the College of Natural Resources, coordinated the event.
Approximately 20 high school teams (80 students) demonstrated their knowledge and skills in
forestry, with the intent to prepare them for careers in forestry, according to
Gilbert.
“This was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the state’s premier undergraduate forestry education
program located at UWSP. Wisconsin produces some of the nation’s finest foresters and most of them
have their start at the College of Natural Resources.”
Each category winner will go on to compete nationally with each high school team competing in
forestry skills. Both individuals and teams are vying to compete later in the year at the National
FFA forestry competition.
