"Old Days" theme for the worlds largest trivia contest
![]() |
Having survived the arrival of a new millennium, the community of Stevens Point, Wis., now faces an even tougher challenge. On April 20 - 22, the worlds largest trivia contest will roll into town. This years contest, "Old Days," marks Trivias 32nd straight year. |
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Points radio station, 90FM WWSP, has sponsored the 54-hour event since its inception in 1969. More than 12,000 people of all ages from all over the nation will gather in Central Wisconsin to compete. The event kicks off on Friday with a parade at 4 p.m. followed by the first question at 6 p.m. The contest runs through the weekend, winding down at midnight on Sunday.
This years theme, "Old Days," refers to Trivias overall theme of "what is past is trivia." The rock band Chicago also produced a song called "Old Days" many years ago and which sums up this years theme, according to Jim Oliva, a leading influence and organizer for trivia for much of the past 30 years.
Each hour of the contest consists of eight questions and teams have the length of two songs in which to answer. The contest also consists of two running questions and three music questions. Running questions get the community involved as teams search the city for clues. Music questions are arrangements of different musical clips. Players identify each clip for added points.
Kicking off the festivities is the Trivia movie, which will be shown at midnight on Friday, April 6, and Saturday, April 7. This years movie is the national premiere showing of "Bridget Jones Diary" staring Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. The movie will be shown at Rogers Campus Cinema in Stevens Point. The price of admission is $3 and the doors open at 11:15 p.m.
"Old Days" teams must register in advance at the 90FM studios the week of the contest. Times for registration are Monday, April 16 thru Thursday, April 19 from 3-7 p.m. and Friday, April 20 from noon to 6 p.m. The registration fee is $30 per team.
While registering for the contest, teams can also register for the Trivia parade. Teams are encouraged to build their own floats for the 4 p.m. parade through the campus.
90FM WWSP is the largest all-student operated radio station in the Midwest. It has served the Stevens Point community for the past 34 years with its unique programming ranging from new age to jazz to the latest in alternative music.
