UWSP’s Sustainability Task Force

Last October, Linda Bunnell, chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), gave the charge for the campus’ first-ever Sustainability Task Force. Creating a sustainable campus and community is part of UWSP’s Vision 2015 and remains a campus priority.

To that end, Bunnell appointed a diverse task force (listed below) of knowledgeable and dedicated campus staff, faculty, and students to make specific, action-oriented recommendations to campus. The taskforce will use the guidelines set forth by the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).

"I believe this organization will provide the taskforce with a specific direction in which to move forward with our campus’s plan for sustainability. I anticipate that the taskforce will find additional avenues to explore in regard to campus sustainability issues," said Bunnell.

Home of one of the largest natural resource programs in the country, UWSP takes its commitment to sustainability very seriously:

  • Conservation has been a tradition at UWSP since the creation of the College of Natural Resources in the 40s.
  • In 2003, our campus signed the Talloires Declaration of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future. A campus Sustainability Committee was established with both university and community representatives (see www.uwsp.edu/admin/chancellor/sustainability.aspx).
  • Solar water heating systems have been installed for Knutzen Hall, the campus’ ecologically focused residence hall, as well as Pray-Sims residence hall and the Health Enhancement Pool.
  • Rain gardens were created around campus to support native landscape plantings that absorb water runoff from the roof, decreasing water in the stormwater system and the energy needed to treat that water.
  • Photovoltaic windows and low-energy lighting were added to the remodeled Noel Fine Arts Center, and elements of energy conservation have been included in current remodeling of the Dreyfus University Center.
  • A "green roof" was installed on one section of the University Library. Five different drought tolerant plants provide an extra layer of insulation for the building and evaporative cooling in the summer, reducing energy usage and rain runoff as well as improving air quality by trapping and absorbing nitrous oxides, volatile organic compounds and airborne particulate matter.
  • The Paper Science program uses recycled newspapers to create paper for local elementary schools.
  • Courses in chemistry and natural resources emphasize sustainable practices.
  • On April 4, 2006, Chancellor Linda Bunnell signed an agreement that will allow "green power" to be used as an energy source on campus as of September. The environmentally friendly NatureWise program available through Wisconsin Public Service has UWSP purchasing blocks of methane generated power (derived from cow manure) to supplement 10 percent of our total energy consumption.
  • Plans include a campus kiosk project that will provide interactive sites for students, faculty and staff to learn more about and monitor renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies at UWSP.

Members of the Sustainability Task Force are: Jack Annis, retired lecturer in resource management; Steve Bjella, professor of music/violin; John Blakeman, assistant professor of political science; Tom Brown, architect, board member Midwest Renewable Energy Association; Katherine Clancy, assistant professor of water resources; Michael Demchik, associate professor of forestry; Bob Govett, professor of forestry, wood utilization; Anna Haines, director Center for Land Use Education (CLUE); Paul McGinley, associate professor of water resources; Thomas Miller, campus ombudsman, senior university relations specialist; Holly Nickel, senior majoring in wildlife ecology (California); Robert Oehler, director of facility services; Eric Olsen, instructor, Center for Land Use Education (CLUE); Ben Ropella, senior majoring in education (Neenah); Jasia Steinmetz, associate professor of health promotion and human development; Carrie Ziolkowski, outreach specialist in energy education; and Mike Zsido, assistant director of building services/residential living.
