UWSP physics majors receive NSF undergraduate summer research appointments

Eight physics majors at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) have been accepted into the prestigious National Science Foundation’s (NSF) summer REU programs (Research Experiences for Undergraduates).

"This is a milestone for the physics faculty and students at Point, as well as a reflection on the quality in the department and character of our excellent students," said Bob Beeken, chair of the Physics Department. In past years, the department typically has two or three physics majors accepted into REU programs.

The REU program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This program provides educational opportunities for undergraduate students and provides indirect funding for undergraduate students to participate in research. A directory of active REU Sites, along with contact information, can be found on the Web at www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/reu_search.cfm.

Students who have been awarded a 2008 summer undergraduate research opportunity, by hometown, are:

  • Fitchburg - Steve Lynam, a senior in mathematics and physics, is also completing his research at Duke University. He is a 2004 graduate of Verona High School.
  • Kimberly - Chelsey Driessen, a senior majoring in physics and mathematics, will complete her summer research at Duke University. She is a 2005 graduate of Kimberly High School.
  • Saukville - Michelle Stephens is also completing her research at the University of Notre Dame. She is a junior majoring in physics and mathematics and is a 2006 graduate of Port Washington High School.
  • Stevens Point - Kyle Taylor, a senior majoring in mathematics, will complete his summer research at the University of Rochester in New York. Taylor is a 2005 graduate of Stevens Point Area Senior High School.
  • Stevens Point - Liza Piltz, a junior majoring in physics with a minor in mathematics, will complete her summer research at the Southeast Association for Research in Astronomy at Valdosta State University in Georgia. She is a 2005 graduate of SPASH.
  • Stevens Point - Luke Wilson is a junior majoring in physics and mathematics. He will complete his summer research at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
  • Wisconsin Rapids - Karen Chamberlain is a junior majoring in mathematics and physics and is a 2005 graduate of Lincoln High School. Her summer research will take place at the University of Notre Dame.
  • Princeton, Minn. - Karl Larsen, a senior majoring in physics with a minor in Computer Information Systems, will attend Montana State University this summer. He is a native of Princeton, Minn..
