UWSP students attend leadership conference
Three University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point students were among leaders from throughout the state who attended a conference last month at the Wingspread Conference Center in Racine.
"From the Horses Mouth," an all-day conference sponsored by The Johnson Foundation, the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (C.I.R.C.L.E.), the Wisconsin Campus Compact, Northwestern Mutual Foundation and the Davis Family Fund, brought some of Wisconsins young leaders together to hear from national figures. Speakers at the conference included columnist E.J. Dionne, Jr. of the Washington Post, U.S. Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (Madison), U.S. Congressman Mark Green (Green Bay) and a welcome by Boyd H. Gibbons, III, president of The Johnson Foundation.
Thirty-five students from around the state were given a chance to engage directly with members of Wisconsins congressional delegation and others, share their passion for politics and discuss the combination of partisanship with civility and compromise.
UWSP attendees included Jennifer Kingsley, Jon Greendeer and Chad Balke.
Jennifer Kingsley is a native of Akeley, Minn., and a senior majoring in natural resource management. "I wound up walking away with ideas and perceptions that had never before crossed my mind, as well as an unforgettable experience. That is what made the conference worth it."
Balke, 3700 S. 86th Street, Milwaukee, is a senior majoring in public administration. "Before the event I was very cynical of our political system. I believe that the discussion changed some of my beliefs about politicians and politics."
Greendeer, 1567 Church St., Stevens Point, is a senior majoring in political science. "This discussion allowed participants to listen and understand many of the reasons why young voters are not taking the time to participate in the democratic process."
UWSP is a member of the Wisconsin Campus Compact, a coalition to strengthen civic engagement and service-learning partnerships between postsecondary institutions and the communities they serve. Other UW System participants at the conference included UW-Marathon County, UW-Barron County, UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee, UW-River Falls, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh.
