UW-Stevens Point’s Thomas named to Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation board

Christine Thomas, associate dean of the College of Natural Resources and professor of resource management at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, has been selected to join the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation’s (RMEF) board of directors. Thomas has been an active member of the foundation since 1994.

In 1991 Thomas developed the "Becoming an Outdoors-Woman" workshop at UWSP in response to a growing number of women interested in becoming involved in outdoor activities. Since its inception, the program has expanded to 45 states and seven Canadian provinces. In 1994 the RMEF became a national sponsor. Thomas has instructed "Becoming an Outdoors-Woman" mini-workshops at five of its national conventions.

"I admire the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation," Thomas said. "I think it’s a great group that does many positive things."

During her three-year unpaid volunteer board term, Thomas will help make policy decisions on issues regarding land conservation, programs, development, finance and personnel.

Thomas’s commitment to conservation has been acknowledged through many honors, including American Sportfishing Association Woman of the Year, Whitetail Conservationist of the Year, Safari Club Educator of the Year and Budweiser/National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Outdoorsman of the Year. She also is a member of 11 other conservation organizations.

RMEF is an international nonprofit conservation organization with a mission to ensure the future of elk, other wildlife and their habitats. Founded in 1984, the foundation now has 110,000 members who have helped generate $90 million to conserve and enhance 2.9 million acres of wildlife habitat across North America. The organization's headquarters is in Missoula, Mont.

Thomas holds a Ph.D. in land resources from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At UWSP she teaches integrated resource management, resource policy and law, and natural resources and public relations.
