UWSP professor co-author’s primer for running conservation nonprofits

Michael Dombeck, a University of Wisconsin System Fellow and Professor of Global Conservation at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), and Francis Pandolfi co-authored "The Business of the Conservation Nonprofit," a primer to give every conservation organization a better chance at not just surviving, but thriving in a competitive nonprofit world.

Published by Social Enterprise Strategies Group in Stonington, Conn., contains 10 chapters on useful strategies and information to help small and/or large conservation organizations succeed in business. Topics include information on creating a strategic plan, a business plan and budget, performance measures, and a board of directors, as well as the role of marketing, and internal procedures and guidelines. According to Chris Wood, chief operating officer of Trout Unlimited, "The approaches so clearly outlined by Dombeck and Pandolfi will greatly benefit any conservation organization."

According to Dombeck and Pandolfi, "We wrote this book to help those associated with NGOs (nongovernmental organizations) to improve the effectiveness and success of their organizations. The purpose of this book is to lay out a number of simple and straightforward ideas that you can consider to create or reshape your organization to be as effective as possible."

Dombeck was former chief of the U.S. Forest Service and former director of the Bureau of Land Management before becoming a member of the UWSP faculty in 2001. He is a nationally renowned conservationist with over 25 years experience in managing federal lands and natural resources. Dombeck has focused much of his efforts on sustainable forest ecosystem management, watershed health and restoration, fisheries management, and countless public speaking engagements both nationally and internationally. He is the recipient of the prestigious Lady Bird Johnson Conservation Award, the Audubon Medal and the Distinguished Executive Award, the highest award in federal service.

Dombeck received his bachelor’s degree in biology and master’s degree in biology and education from UWSP. He also received a master’s in zoology from the University of Minnesota and a doctorate in fisheries biology from Iowa State University.

Pandolfi is the first-ever chief operating officer for the U.S. Forest Service after over 30 years of private sector business experience with CBS and nine years as CEO of Times Mirror Magazines, a publisher of outdoor-oriented magazines. He has an engineering degree from Princeton and an MBA from Harvard.
