Carlsten Gallery features "Clothing as Metaphor"
The importance of fashion and how clothing has established a connection with its wearers will be on display in a new show, "Clothing as Metaphor," at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Edna Carlsten Gallery Sunday, March 11 to April 8.
An opening reception will be held Monday, March 12, from 4-6 p.m. Free and open to the public, the Carlsten Gallery is located on the second floor of the Noel Fine Arts Center and is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday evenings from 7-9 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m.
Caren Heft, gallery director, along with student and co-curator Eva Heule of West Bend, began research and collection of artwork in May 2006. Their studies began with contemporary artists whose work was clothing-based or created using forms of mixed media. The culmination of the research was contact with the artists and inviting them to present at the show.
"Clothing in general is something that can really be read into," Heule said. "It tells a lot about a particular society at large."
The "Clothing As Metaphor" show, according to Heule, will not only be a visual feast for the eyes but it will also be a mentally stimulating experience as you explore artists work centered on or around clothing, culture and identity.
