CWES offers summer programs
The
Central Wisconsin Environmental Station (CWES) on Sunset Lake, a field station
of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, is offering its 32nd
year of summer programming beginning this June.
Professionals in youth programm
ing
and environmental education will run the programs with the aid of UWSP students.
New this year is "Earth and Sky," a July 22-27 adventure trip for 15-17 year olds. Campers will spend two full days rappelling and rock climbing at Devils Lake State Park, then traversing two different caves in Western Wisconsin the following day. The cost is $425 per person.
Also new are two advanced camps. "Becoming an Outdoor Leader" is for those who have done it all and want to learn leadership skills through hands-on challenges in order to become a future summer camp counselor/naturalist. It will be held June 24-29 for ages 16-17 and costs $315.
"Outdoor Skills Advanced," July 15-20, is for ages 13-15 and costs $345. Campers have the chance to further their education by training in wilderness first aid, shooting a bow from a ladder stand, outdoor cooking basics, how to use a GPS unit and catching dinner for camp with advanced fly ties.
The popular family camps will be offered again this year, with options for one-day, two-day or weekend long camps.
Other offerings this summer include:
- "Everything Under the Sun," ages 9-11, June 17-22, $315 ($350 with horseback riding). This is the traditional summer camp for those who want to do it all. Campers will enjoy all of the things that they love about camp and will be challenged to try some new things too.
- "Outdoor Skills Camp," ages 10-12, June 24-29, $315. Campers train in archery, orienteering, fire building, shelter building, fly tying, canoeing, kayaking and more. The new skills will be put to the test in an Outdoor Skills Olympics.
- "Natural Resources Careers Camp," ages 15-17, July 22-27, $315. A great opportunity to learn about careers in forestry, waters, wildlife, fisheries, land use planning, soils, environmental education/interpretation and international opportunities at UWSP. A credit from UWSP is available for an additional fee.
