A new major at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Web and Digital Media Development (WDMD) has been approved by the UW System Board of Regents.

Housed in the Department of Mathematics and Computing, the major focuses on using Web and digital computer technology to create, communicate and collaborate with an emphasis on applying these techniques to the world of business and commerce.

Students who complete the major will be able to develop multimedia digital presentations, CDs and Web sites and be comfortable with design issues, aesthetic components, computer technology and media tools used in the creative process. The curriculum includes WDMD courses supplemented with classes in Computer Information Systems, Business and Business Writing.

Professor Roger Bullis, who helped develop the major, says the program is both skills and issues driven.

"WDMD students will have an understanding of the creative, social and technological issues they will face after graduation," Bullis says. "This major was designed to enable high-tech, high paying jobs and prepare knowledge leaders and managers for the upcoming century."

"As more employers, businesses, and nonprofit agencies make use of the worldwide Web, jobs requiring Web production and graphics, audio and video skills have proliferated. This major will provide a significant number of graduates prepared to fill such jobs," says Jim Gifford, chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computing.
