Community members to attend "UW-Day: Building Wisconsins
Future"
in Madison on March 7
STEVENS POINTJohn and Eva Regnier of Stevens Point
will join more than 1,500 friends of the University of Wisconsin System at an event to highlight public higher education. They will represent the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at UW-Day on March 7.The one-day event, "UW-Day: Building Wisconsins Future," will involve each of the UW Systems 15 institutions, the Board of Regents, local community leaders, and alumni and friends of each institution, said Katharine Lyall, UW System president. A large turnout of legislators and other public officials is also expected, she added.
John Regnier, a former member of the UWSP Board of Visitors (BOV), and Eva Regnier are longtime friends of UWSP. Others who will attend on behalf of UWSP include John Ross of Waupaca, the UWSP Foundation Board of Directors; Dean Ryerson, superintendent of Wisconsin Rapids schools; Brian Oehler and John Clark of Midstate Technical College, Wisconsin Rapids and Stevens Point; and Gerald Vance of Germantown, a UWSP alumnus and former member of the BOV.
The focus of the program, which is funded using private contributions, will be the many ways in which the UW System benefits students, the general public and the Wisconsin economy. That afternoon, guests of each institution will have the opportunity to meet with their local legislators in the Capitol to discuss the value of the university in their communities and its impact on the state.
The event also includes an evening reception from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. A brief program at 6:30 p.m. will feature remarks by Lyall, Board of Regents President Jay L. Smith and Governor Scott McCallum.
Music groups from throughout the UW System will perform continuously during the evening festivities including a UWSP jazz combo. Each institution will also present major

Professor Keith Rice of geography/geology and his students will also demonstrate how they use Geographic Information Systems (GIS), computerized global positioning, for geographic mapping."This will be a great opportunity for our institutions to show off a little," said Lyall, "and to interact with legislators, alumni and friends of the UW System.
