U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld plans to speak at Laird Day
U.S. Secretary of
Defense Donald Rumsfeld is scheduled to give the keynote speech at the 19th
biennial Melvin R. Laird Youth Leadership Day Luncheon, Monday, April 28, at the
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Secretary Rumsfelds staffers at the U.S. Department of Defense assured UWSP Laird Day planners of his desire to visit Central Wisconsin and meet with area high school students.
"Proud to Be an American" is the theme of the one-day event in the University Center. Governor James Doyle will open the morning program with remarks on keeping the balance between national security needs and individual liberties.
Melvin Laird, former U.S. Seventh Congressional District Representative, U.S. Secretary of Defense and Counsellor to the President for Domestic Affairs, has hosted the youth leadership event every other year at UWSP since 1965. Ten outstanding resource leaders from around the country will meet with student delegates in small groups during the day.
"In a recent conversation, Secretary Rumsfeld mentioned that he is looking forward to interacting with high school students participating in the Leadership program at UWSP," said Laird in a telephone interview with the university.
Secretary Rumsfelds address will be broadcast via closed circuit television, Cable Channel 10, at 12:20 p.m.
