Herrold retires following a 34-year career at UWSP
A faculty member who is a specialist in the physiology of exercise and human anatomy will retire this summer after 34 years of teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Judith Herrold, a professor with joint appointments in the Schools of Health Promotion and Human Development, and Health, Exercise Science and Athletics, came to UWSP in 1968 to teach "for a couple of years" and ended up staying for 34.
Conditions were a little austere when Herrold first came to campus. She says she had to write grants to buy the equipment she needed to teach her classes.
Two things Herrold believes have sustained her through the many changes that have occurred at UWSP are her sense of humor and her belief in "never growing old." She sometimes became a student herself, taking courses to help her learn how her own students learned. Recently, hip replacement surgery and an ensuing bacterial infection have called upon the Indiana native to remain positive throughout a lengthy recuperation.
Herrold believes good advising is key to helping students finish their degrees in a timely fashion. She has spent many years advising students in a variety of majors including health promotion, physical education, dietetics and pre-professionals in occupational and physical therapy, nursing and mortuary science.
Versatility has been Herrolds stock in trade. At one point in her career, she was involved in a bionutrition laboratory with faculty from several disciplines. She has taught human anatomy, exercise physiology, Yoga, CPR, first aid, relaxation, swimming, even dance. Although when she taught dance at the Goshen (Ind.) Public schools in the early 60s, the classes were called "rhythmic activities." She holds degrees from Indiana University, Michigan State University and The Ohio State University.
Two of the highlights of Herrolds career were trips to Germany to visit several institutes of physiology and to China to evaluate the countrys fitness programs.
During retirement, Herrold plans to pursue her hobbies of music, sailing and fishing, travel to Germany and Switzerland to trace ancestors, and continue her involvement with the American College Sports Medicine Association.
