Dombeck keynote speaker for symposium
Michael Dombeck, who recently resigned as chief of the National Forest Service, will return to his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, to be the keynote speaker at a Forest Service Symposium on Thursday, April 19.
His address will be from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. in the University Center (UC) Laird Room.
Students from Professor Doug Posts Biology 100 classes planned and will coordinate the 13 symposium sessions from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Laird Room. The sessions, including Dombecks speech, are open to the public without charge.
Katie Trickey, a sophomore business administration major from Boulder Junction, and Kyle Sargent, a senior psychology major from Washburn, have worked with a team of four group leaders and other students in implementing the event. (Group leaders are: Julie Kopf, sophomore, elementary education, 1312 S. Casaloma Drive, Appleton; Patrick Dailey, sophomore theatre arts, Wabeno; Jacob Knorre, sophomore undecided, W1002 Fish Ave., Montello; Carolyn Stack, freshman political science, 3402 Hwy. 10 E, Eagle River.)
"We are not biology majors," the students say in the conference brochure, "and to make this outside commitment shows the interest and passion we feel for the goal Dr. Dombeck would like to achieve. We are striving to make a difference in the current state and future of our national forests."
The luncheon in the UC Alumni Room is limited to 150 people at a cost of $10 each. It will feature an after lunch address by Curt Meine, director of conservation programs at Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters in Madison. Meine is the author of a biography of Aldo Leopold, "Aldo Leopold: His Life and Work," editor of a collection of essays on literature, history and landscape, and co-editor of a book of Leopolds quotations and commentaries. Active in state, national and world conservation efforts, he is a member of the Crane Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union and a research associate with the
